Coronado High School athletics is part of the California Interscholastic Foundation (CIF) participating in the San Diego section. Within the San Diego section, each Coronado High School sport is placed in either Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV, Division V, or the most competitive, Open, division based on their record from the prior years.  At the end of the regular season, the top ranked teams in each division compete in the CIF tournament to determine the champions of each division.

Many sports have both a Varsity and Junior Varsity team. Some sports with a large number of players will also offer a freshman team to encourage greater participation.

CHS also offers Club sports including boys and girls beach volleyball, and rugby that are not CIF sports. Registration for Club sports are administered by CHS but all other management, fees and costs are the responsibility of the participating athletes.
